Quench & Tempered Rods Vs Normalized & Tempered Rods
For Years the sucker rod market has never had the infrastructure to mass-produce quality Quenched & Tempered sucker rods. The machinery is costly, the process is difficult to master, and the industry has widely defaulted to the easily manufactured Normalized & Tempered rods.
Today’s operators are missing out on the most substantial benefit of Quenched & Tempered sucker rods…Fatigue Resistance. Stress cracks are inevitable with all steel, especially under stress loads. The fatigue resistance of a steel determines how resistant to failure a rod will be once those stress cracks initiate. Aside from chemical programs, well design, rod handling and many other variables that plague sucker rod failures…Operators should have confidence that the rod they’re receiving is the most durable and reliable product they can find.
The below test was a blind Charpy Impact test conducted by an independent third party metallurgy lab in Houston. They collected “KD” (4320, 4330, 4720, etc.) and High Strength (4138, 3130, etc.) from all major manufacturers to conduct this test. This test proved that Q&T rods are more fatigue resistant that N&T rods in all categories.
